Our Story

Arriving in Hobart as a young man, Eddie Chu worked various roles in the fruit and vegetable industry from shelf filling and warehouse work to deliveries. Eddie worked for some of the most established greengrocer families, such as the Abates, the Chungs, the Fitzgeralds and the Henerys.

With a strong drive and determination, Eddie, along with his wife Angela, opened their very own store. In 1975 A-One Fruit Market was born, a humble corner-store on the main street of North Hobart, dedicated to servicing the neighbourhood and surrounding businesses. During the 1980's A-One Fruit Market relocated to Glenorchy, taking space between a tile shop and a hardware store. After many decades of success the business expanded it's footprint and eventually took over the entire block.

Believing that fruit and vegetable retailing could be done differently, Eddie took a different approach from the other retailers. Rather than simply sourcing what the customer wanted, he instead looked in the market to see what was actually available. Reaching out to both local and interstate growers, importers and wholesalers, Eddie established strong relationships with suppliers built on mutual respect, honesty and friendship. Eddie and Angela's children would later follow in their footsteps and continue the business to this present day.
